Speech by Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados at the Conference "20 years of the Municipal Museum of the Kalavritan Holocaust", Kalavrita, 11-12 January 2025

Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados, UNESCO Chair holder of the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion: Urban Sustainable Mobility and Utilization of Cultural Resources"and Director of the Postgraduate Studies Programme (MSc. ) "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT and Advanced Digital Technologies", participated as an invited speaker in the two-day conference held in Kalavrita on 11 and 12 January 2025, on the occasion of the "20 years of operation of the Municipal Museum of the Kalavritan Holocaust". The two-day conference was hosted at the Multipurpose Cultural Centre of Kalavryta, while Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados was warmly welcomed by the President of the Municipal Museum of the Kalavritan Holocaust, Mr. Theodoros Hamakiotis and the Mayor of Kalavryta, Mr. Athanasios Papadopoulos.

Mr. He highlighted the crucial role of the Municipal Museum of the Kalavritan Holocaust in achieving the Sustainable Development goals of the city of Kalavryta, as well as in preserving cultural memory, analyzing how the modern and stressed the importance of digitization in linking historical heritage with the challenges of modern times.

Mr. Vergados pointed out that cities in the periphery, such as Kalavryta, have a better chance of achieving sustainable development goals in the future, compared to the more populous urban centres.

In this context, the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion. Its work sets the basis for the formation of human-centered, technologically advanced and innovative cities.

Through the exploitation of cultural heritage, the application of advanced technologies and the education of young people, cities can become people-centred and adapted to the requirements of sustainable development. As Mr Vergados pointed out, culture is not a static concept, but a dynamic process that enhances urban and regional development, while at the same time contributing to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In this context, the "Municipal Museum of the Kalavritan Holocaust" with its 20 years of operation has contributed significantly to the preservation of the history and culture of Kalavryta, but also to the development of the region.
