About the Unesco Chair
In October 2022, the UNESCO Chair "Creative Cities in Motion: Urban Sustainable Mobility and Utilization of Cultural Resources" was awarded to the "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT, and Advanced Digital Technologies and Services" Laboratory (DigiLab) at the University of Piraeus, which is directly connected to the Master's Program (M.Sc.) "Digital Culture, Smart Cities, IoT, and Advanced Digital Technologies." Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados, who serves as the Director of the Laboratory and the M.Sc. program, is the appointed Head – Chair Holder of the UNESCO Chair.
This distinction holds significant symbolism and importance as it highlights the quality of our Laboratory's research work and enhances the outward focus of both the DigiLab and the University of Piraeus as a whole, elevating their position on the global academic map, considering that this is the first UNESCO Chair being granted to the Department of Informatics of the University of Piraeus.
The awarded UNESCO Chair will serve as a center for research and innovation. Close collaboration with UNESCO, the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO, other UNESCO Chairs, as well as national and international organizations involved in relevant programs and activities, will contribute to the creation of a center of excellence and innovation.
The aim of this UNESCO Chair is to contribute, through educational and advisory means, to the promotion of sustainable creative urban development by utilizing new technologies and services, innovative and climate-neutral ecosystems, strengthening the creative industry and advanced digital skills, promoting the preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage, urban environments, and revitalizing cultural life in cities. Additionally, the Chair aims to protect the cultural landscape and raise public awareness about smart and digitally sustainable, secure, inclusive, and resilient cities and settlements, alongside promoting sustainable urban mobility.
A network of collaborators, consisting of postgraduate students, doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, as well as members of the academic community, various stakeholders and members of international organizations, will be established to ensure the smooth operation, planning, and implementation of activities. This network will join forces to achieve the best possible results.
