Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados appointed new member of the National Council for Research, Technology and Innovation (ESETEK)
The National Council for Research, Technology, and Innovation (ESETEK)
is the highest advisory body of the State in matters concerning the
formulation of national strategy for Research, Technology, and Innovation Development
and Innovation (ETAK). By decision of the Minister and Deputy Minister
of Development, responsible for Research and Innovation, the new
members of ESEK were appointed, who are internationally renowned scientists in
their field.
Among the members is Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados
of the University of Piraeus, holder of the UNESCO Chair "Creative
Cities in Motion: Urban Sustainable Mobility and Utilization of Cultural
Resources" and Director of the Postgraduate Program "Digital Culture, Smart
Cities, IoT, and Advanced Digital Technologies."
The selection of Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados reflects his
systematic and multi-level contribution to the field of research and
innovation. As Chair of the UNESCO University Chair "Creative
Cities in Motion" and Director of one of the most innovative postgraduate
programs, he is expected to contribute significantly to the formulation of
national research and technology priorities, the development of
development strategy, and strengthening and linking research and
technology. In his statement, Professor Dimitrios D. Vergados pointed out:
"Research and innovation are prerequisites for the country's development
country," highlighting the need for active utilization of
scientific knowledge for the benefit of society and the economy. His
participation in ESEK further strengthens the strategic presence of the
UNESCO Chair and the MSc program "Digital Culture, Smart Cities,
IoT, and Advanced Digital Technologies" as centers of extroverted,
interdisciplinary and strategically targeted research, with an impact at national
and international level.
ESETEK's mission is, among other things, to submit proposals and
encourage the adoption of public policies based on the research
work of the research centers supervised by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, with the aim of
improving society as a whole. The Council recommends policies that
transform research into innovation and strengthen its interconnection
with entrepreneurship and private initiative. At the same time, it promotes
creative collaboration between research, education, and
productive sectors of the economy, while monitoring international developments
submitting documented proposals. In addition, ESEK, among
other things, proposes measures to attract private capital,
strengthen investment in start-ups, and promote
their interconnection. Its work is supported by the Sectoral Scientific
Councils (TES).
